Things Got Fiesty
While the four ladies on the show inspired and empowered women week on week from the late 90’s, Cattrall has commented that the ladies had a “toxic relationship,” something fans were disappointed to learn.
Before Samantha Jones
While the rumors circulated that the ladies were not the best of friends off-screen, Samantha Jones kept up the facade during the series, and the four women worked together to empower their female fans. However, Kim nearly did not take the role of Samantha, and it took a lot of convincing the then 40-year-old to play the powerful and confident character. Meanwhile, before Kim took on the role as Samantha, she was already a well-known actress having starred in Quincy, M.E., Columbo, Starsky & Hutch and The Incredible Hulk.
Kim, Is That You?
After appearing on the small screen, she moved to film and appeared as Lieutenant Valeris in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. A far cry away from her Samantha appearance, for her role as Lieutenant Valeris she was seen in a lot more clothing and sporting prosthetic Vulcan ears, making her nearly unrecognizable. However, during filming she arranged a nude photo shoot in secret, posing in nothing but her Vulcan ears. Now this sounds more like Samantha Jones.
Making The Right Decision
Her decision to play Samantha came in 1998 after she was initially reluctant to take the role. Looking back, we are sure she is glad she changed her mind after originally turning the role down twice, before finally accepting it on her third offer. Her decision was proven to be the right one since she was awarded five Emmy Award nominations, four Golden Globe nominations, and one win. That is in addition to the two ensemble Screen Actors Guild Awards she won with her co-stars.
Could Kim Get What She Wanted?
While it may have been all smiles on the red carpet when the co-stars posed alongside each other and accepted awards with one another, rumors began to swirl that Cattrall was the only one who did not want to be apart of the movie adaptation of the series. The reason was that Cattrall wanted more money in light of Sarah Jessica Parker’s pay increase, and this ostracized her from the group of friends. Meanwhile, all the fans wanted was a film, and eventually, they got two!
Sex And The City Was Not Over
The show for the franchise began in 1998 and ended in 2004. Fortunately, the first film came out in 2008, with the second one following two years later in 2010. With such success, there was bound to be a third, in yet another gorgeous location, with fantastic wardrobe choices and a good amount of gossip to keep fans hooked. Even Sarah Jessica Parker stated that they had a “beautiful, funny, heartbreaking, joyful, very relatable script and story” ready, but it has been canceled.
Samantha vs. Kim
Fans around the world rejoiced at the news that all four original ladies were on board and they were not seeing the end of Sex and The City. After all, Samantha Jones was a crucial character in the franchise, showing that the modern woman can be successful and independent by their own right, while also being beautiful and attractive. In real life, Kim has lived a similar life to her on-screen character. She has had a successful career but also had her fair share of relationships.
Third Time Still Was Not So Lucky
Cattrall has been married and divorced three times. She did not have children during any of her marriages and currently is not in a relationship. Her first marriage to Larry Davis was from 1977 to 1979 and was annulled. Her second marriage to Andre J. Lyson was from 1982 to 1989, and the couple lived in Frankfurt, Germany, during that time. Her third marriage was during her time on Sex and The City, to Mark Levinson, but the pair divorced in 2004.
The Price Had To Be Paid
While fans knew Kim as Samantha, the feisty and confident character who is afraid of monogamy, other issues came her way which led to the demise of her three relationships. While she claims she was too young when she got married the first time, long-distance and work played a part in the fall of her next two marriages, and she claimed, “Acting is a self-centered world, and everything seems to dissolve in the face of our obsession with work. There’s always a price to pay.”
Making Those Sacrifices
It seems that taking on the role as Samantha Jones meant Kim Cattrall had to give up other important parts of her life. The price Cattrall paid was that she failed to get pregnant via IVF with her third husband when she was in her forties. Discussing the fact she worked 19-hour-days, she expressed in an interview that her long working days had consequences on her personal life and she had issues in getting pregnant during this time, resulting in Cattrall never having children.
Double Trouble For Kim
While she was going through a divorce from her third husband, she was also facing news headlines of her feud with her co-stars, proving to be quite the tumultuous time for Kim Cattrall. In true Samantha style, she continued to be linked to other men over the years and following her divorce, she decided to film the first of the Sex and The City movies. That doesn’t mean constant speculation from years prior about the leading ladies friendships ended there.
They Weren’t Helping Themselves
During the 2004 Emmy Awards, Cattrall sat away from her co-stars, and even after their win, she was not seen celebrating with them. Adding fuel to the fire that was already the rumor mill for the previous six years, Cattrall was making things very clear as to the relationship status with her co-stars. However, Cattrall also previously stated that “People don’t want to believe that we get on. They have too much invested in the idea of two strong, successful women fighting with each other,” when speaking of Parker.
Did Filming The Movies Help?
With conflicting statements continuing to swirl over the years about their tumultuous relationship, it is no surprise that Kim’s co-stars also spoke on the matter. Especially during a time where their on-screen friendship was being showcased around the world, fans were desperate to believe the relationship they saw on-screen was the same off-screen. So, while Kim was filming alongside a very attractive younger male during the film, what was really happening with her female co-stars?
Sarah Jessica Parker Has Her Say
According to Sarah Jessica Parker, the leading lady of the show and the co-star everyone pointed the finger at for causing a rift with Cattrall, gave her statement on the rumors. In a Marie Claire interview in May 2010, SJP stated, “When you’re on set, you’re working 90-hour weeks, you’re never home, you’re exhausted. There are times when all of us have been sensitive, and sometimes feelings get hurt. But I don’t have any regrets about how I’ve treated people.”
Playing Happy Families
While that statement may lead to the assumption that heated words may have been exchanged during their filming where people’s feelings got hurt, it doesn’t seem like they all hated each other. In fact, Cattrall had stated earlier that same year that, “I think Sarah is fantastic… She and I are sick of this,” referring to the constant questioning over their relationship. However, Cattrall attracted more controversy in 2017 when she spoke about the third installment of the Sex and The City movie.
Will There Be A Third Movie?
As such a successful franchise, it would be seen as a no-brainer to make the third movie since the fans will no doubt turn up in their millions to watch their favorite four friends share the juicy details of their lives. However, Cattrall was quick to shut down those rumors in 2016 stating, “Everyone is doing their own thing, and if it was going to happen, it would have happened by now.” Did Cattrall just not feel like filming scenes with attractive younger men anymore?
More Rumors Over Kim
Rumors flared up once again in 2017 when it was claimed that Cattrall chose to not film the third movie because she demanded that Warner Bros. produce other movies for her to be a part of, and this was not something that was going to happen. Cattrall was quick to address these claims by taking to Twitter and setting the truth straight. She wrote, “The only ‘DEMAND’ I ever made was that I didn’t want to do a 3rd film.”
Setting The Stories Straight
Kim Cattrall has never been afraid to open her mouth, both on and off-screen, and this time was no different. Appearing on Life Stories with Piers Morgan, Cattrall had the chance to set the stories straight, addressing the rumors circulating her persona as a diva. While her character on the series may not have cared what people had to say, she sure had something to say on the way Sarah Jessica Parker acted towards her.
Time To Speak Out
Making it very clear she will not be involved in another Sex and The City movie, she also set the record straight that she has never made any unreasonable demands to Warner Bros., and expressed, “I never asked for any money, I never asked for any projects. To be thought of as some kind of diva is absolutely ridiculous.” Not holding back her words, she continued to express her feelings towards her co-star, something she had tried to avoid in doing up until now.
Enough Of Playing Mr. Nice Guy
She goes on to tell Piers, “This is really where I take to task the people from Sex and the City and specifically Sarah Jessica Parker in that I think she could have been nicer. I really think she could have been nicer.” It seems as though Kim had enough and decided to take the narrative into her own hands. She has finally confirmed the rumors. While playing Samantha and sipping her martinis and scouting out the best looking younger male she could, her drink was not the only thing being stirred.
Friends or Foes?
While they would all gather together to share their most intimate details, Cattrall confesses that this was not the same with her co-stars following the show, and this is when she confided in Piers to speak of the “toxic relationship.” She shared, “Another thing that’s really disappointing is that nobody ever picks up the phone and tries to contact you and say, ‘how you doing?’ That would have been the way to handle it,” she said. “That’s not what happened here, this is, it feels like a toxic relationship.”
What Happens On The Show, Stays On The Show
As she continued to address the questions proposed to her by the chat show host, she did confess she had “genuine affection” for her cast mates, but there was no mention of weekly get-togethers over Sunday breakfasts to confide in one another. Admitting she doesn’t really stay in touch with her former cast mates following their success on the show, she did explain, “They all have children and I am ten years older… The common ground that we had was the series and the series is over.”
Take Samantha Away
After Cattrall confessed there was little in common amongst her and the other ladies, it was clear that Kim Cattrall would not be reviving the role of Samantha Jones anytime soon. In fact, she proposed another idea while discussing her distance from the third prequel of the film. “I want them to make the movie if that’s what they want to do. [Samantha is] a great part. I played it past the finish line and then some, and I loved it, and another actress should play it,” she said.
Pretty Big Boots To Fill
It is hard to imagine someone else playing THE Samantha Jones, after all, she played the character down to a tee. Her flawless appearance, her ability to flirt through her eyes, and her enviable figure was just the appearance that made up Jones but, having played the character since 1998, it is questionable as to whether anyone could walk in Cattrall’s shoes as a replacement. That doesn’t stop her from suggesting ideas as to who the perfect candidate could be.
Time To Give Samantha Jones A Change
To an amazing reception from the audience, Cattrall suggested, “Maybe they could make it an African-American Samantha Jones, or a Hispanic Samantha Jones, or bring in another character. It can be another character. This is what I really believe that this franchise needs another point of view and this could be it.” Cattrall believes heavily in the shows original premise since, after all, it changed televisions outlook of women and their role in society during the 2000’s. Now she see’s it can be empowering in other ways.
Tweeting Her Thoughts
Once again, stories circulating Cattrall’s relationship with her co-stars was not shut down after her interview with Piers Morgan. In fact, Cattrall sparked up further speculation when she took to her Twitter account to make it clear how she felt. On October 9, she retweeted an article from the New York Post which read, “On screen, they were best friends. Off screen, they were torn apart by jealousy, rivalry and money.” Well, here we had four on-screen best friends, and off-screen things were very different.
Fans Start To Speculate
Since many of the rumors over the years about the co-stars from the series related back to money issues, it was no surprise that fans suggested the tweet was to do with her time on Sex and The City. While she may have eventually participated in the two film adaptations of the series after originally not wishing to do so, Cattrall may have been suggesting that things were tense on set when they were not reciting their given lines from the script.
No Love Lost
In fact, the crucial moment came when Cattrall made the clear and straight to the point statement. Now, brace yourself hardcore fans of Sex and The City, this may be what you have longed never to hear be uttered by any of the four ladies. Cattrall explained to Morgan, “We’ve never been friends. We’ve been colleagues, and in some ways, it’s a very healthy place to be because then you have a clear line between your professional life and relationship and your personal.”
That’s Just The Way It Is
So there it is. The truth has been said, or the truth according to Cattrall and her relationship with Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis. The four friends who may have had their ups and downs but had always had each other on the show was nothing that it was like in real life for Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte. However, she has stated that the fact she no longer spends most of her time in New York could play a part.
The Effect Of A Tweet
Meanwhile, tensions arose once again during a sad time for Kim Cattrall, and fans were made aware of what Cattrall really thought of her former co-star. While she kept relatively tight-lipped during her interview with Pierce Morgan, the same cannot be said when Sarah Jessica Parker offered her condolences following news that Cattrall’s brother had sadly passed away in February 2018. SJP responded to the news on Twitter, and Kim did not seem to like it, at all.
The Cherry On The Cake
Kim definitely hit back at Sarah Jessica Parker for reaching out publicly and posted her own message on Instagram. The former Sex and the City star posted a message which read: “I don’t need your love or support at this tragic time @sarahjessicaparker.” That was not the end of it either. Cattrall continued to express her anger towards Parker, as well as her mothers, and there is now no sugar coating the way Cattrall really feels about her.
You Are Not My Friend
Kim’s caption under her post wrote: “My Mom asked me today ‘When will that @sarahjessicaparker, that hypocrite, leave you alone?’ Your continuous reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you really were then and now. Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy in order to restore your ‘nice girl’ persona.”
Not So Much A Lover Off-Screen
Since these war of words were exchanged, fellow stars from the hit series have taken to their own social media pages to show whose team they are on. While Kim thanked her co-star Cynthia Nixon for her condolences, Nixon posted a photo of herself alongside Parker with the caption, “Old friends ran into each other at a @tmagazine shoot today…miss you @sarahjessicaparker.” Meanwhile, Jason Lewis, who played Cattrall’s on-screen younger boyfriend during the franchise, weighed in on the feud.
Somethings Are Better Left Unsaid
When asked in an interview what he felt about the feud between his former co-stars, he began by saying, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” He then continued, “Listen, I would have to say that Sarah was always so lovely and such a consummate professional, and I think that people should remember their graciousness and the things that have been given to them, and I’m going to stop there because I’ve got nothing good to say.”
Never Say Never
While Kim may have mentioned that she has no desire to star in the third installment of the Sex and the City film franchise, die-hard fans would like to follow the phrase ‘never say never.’ However, while chances were looking slim following the Piers Morgan interview, things are looking highly unlikely following the public spat between co-stars. It has now been alleged that writers know Parker and Cattrall will not be making up and, while stating that the trilogy will go ahead, Samantha Jones will be killed off.
