Ariel Winter started playing the role of Alex Dunphy on the ABC hit show Modern Family back when she was only 11 years old. When she started acting at such a young age, her body was not yet developed.
Winter shared with Amazon’s Style Code Live, “When I was 11 years old and started the show I was completely flat. I always wanted to have boobs, to have a butt and curves, and it seemed like I would never get them … and then overnight I turned 12 years old and it was like everything was different and I had the boobs I wanted.”
The 5’1” actress gained more than she wanted once she started developing. After puberty hit, she was subjected to vicious online bullying and constant criticism about her body. She told E News, “Unfortunately, photos came out of me on the Internet after my body had kind of blossomed and people were really hating on me for it. I got a lot of comments like ‘You’re fat, you’re ugly, you’re a slut…it was a lot coming from people I didn’t know at such a young age.”
She later decided to get a breast reduction for reasons beyond the public scrutiny. Winter was open about having breast reduction surgery. She told Glamour magazine in August 2015, “I was 15 years old with [size] F [breasts]. It’s like, How do you navigate that? It started to hurt so bad that I couldn’t take the pain.” Once she decided to get the surgery, the actresses whole life changed. Winter shared, “It’s amazing to finally feel right. This is how I was supposed to be.”
Something else helped Winter overcome her body insecurities. Her onscreen aunt, Sofia Vergara was instrumental in helping Winter learn to love her body and embrace her curves. Winter told Style Code Live, “I did start working with her when I was 11, so I had my whole body evolution, it sounds weird, in front of her and she watched me grow up,” Winter said. “I think she really noticed I would need a little help and inspiration. She was always there for me, she was always great giving me tips and advice of how to appreciate my body. I always watched her appreciate how she looked.”
In the interview with Style Code Live, the Modern Family star also notes her sister as a huge inspiration for her to love her body.
