They serve and protect us and let us sleep sound at night – they are the men and women that make America into the land of the free and the brave. That’s right – we are talking about the patriots who risk their lives every day, the uniform-wearing heroes of the nation – the marines.
Although the price they are willing to pay for the sake of serving their country is admirable, it is still nothing short of heartbreaking to think of how many holidays, events and family moments they have missed out on. In a way, they are putting their own lives on hold for the benefit of others, which is a selfless act unimaginable for most.
For this reason, whenever our troops and Marines come home to visit, a big feast and fiesta is thrown to celebrate the fact they are back where they need to be. All those who love and care for them arrive for the celebration and food is made for the masses. However, this story tells a slightly different tale.
A Marine’s family was hosting their annual reunion in their Los Angeles home and had sadly already come to terms with the fact one person would be missing out on all the fun since he was deployed and has been for the past two years.
Only then, out of nowhere, the man in uniform appeared just as his mother was walking across the backyard.
Unable to hide her contempt, the woman cried in joy and ran in the opposite direction, as though the mere thought of her son being by her side was too unbelievable to bear.
“We got you!” called out one of the relatives, while another person yelled out: “your baby is home.” Still in disbelief, the overemotional mother then shouted out in incredulity: “I ain’t seen him in two years!”
Talk about the best surprise ever!
