The Beach Photoshoot Blues
The ocean is beautiful. The ocean is majestic. And of course a photo shoot next to the ocean is any pregnant woman’s dream – but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good idea. Unfortunately, the ocean can also be very dangerous, from the weather to the mysteries of what lies beneath its dark surface. This couple learned the hard way why it might just be better to keep yourself and your unborn child far away from the ocean.
Dan Mozer and his wife Angeline were pregnant and counting down the days until their first child joined them in the world. But then one day, Dan found himself in a panic about the monumental event that was about to change their lives. See, their time together waiting for this baby had been really special and Dan knew they needed to have something to properly commemorate the time leading up to it.
The solution came to Dan as quickly as the problem had arisen: he would take a photoshoot with her, and then they would have the special image of her pregnancy forever framed. Dan is actually an aspiring photographer, and nothing had ever sounded better to him than to create art with his expecting wife as the beautiful subject. Now he just needed to find the perfect place and time to make the magic happen.
New To Town
That wasn’t as easy of a task as it sounds, however. You see, Dan and Angeline had just moved down to Jacksonville, Florida for work. She is 31 and works as a human resources manager, while he is 30 working as a financial business analyst. Since they were both new to the area, neither of them were familiar with the landscape or had any idea where the best place for a photoshoot would be. But Dan was determined.
Beach Is The Best
Struggling to find the right setting for his dream photo shoot in his new town, Dan opted for the obvious: the beach. It’s free, it’s easily accessible, and it’s always beautiful! What could go wrong? Actually, Dan totally underestimated what problems the beach could cause for him and his very pregnant wife. Sure, it makes a nice background…but there are so many inconvenient sides there as well when you want to keep things clean, easy, and predictable.
An Artist’s Inspiration
His first idea would be his last. It might seem great at first that he didn’t have to go through trials and tribulations with a bunch of different ideas, but his determination to make it work against all the odds would cause a whole lot of problems. The obstacles that were to come would never have happened if he had been willing to compromise on his original idea. But that just isn’t how inspiration works, is it?
Sand Dunes Of Doom
First of all, let’s talk about sand and all the problems that go along with it. Can you even imagine trying to set up a camera stand in the sand? It’s a recipe for disaster. Now try to picture a very pregnant Angeline struggling to walk on the sand – also doesn’t sound too fun. Already there was enough instability going around to prevent this photo shoot from ever even happening. But it gets even worse.
Wary Of Weather
As we all know, the beach is outdoors. That means that whatever is happens in the sky, also happens to everyone on the beach. So as pretty as it might be in the background of a picture on a good day, disaster can also strike at any time, and quite unpredictably at that. Dan was keeping his eyes out every single day, hoping to see clear skies and a good forecast. One day, it seemed like they finally got it.
He was just waiting to jump in the car with Angeline and his camera at the first sign of sun – and that’s exactly what they did this time. They headed down to the beach expecting the good weather to hold out for them, at least long enough to take a few good pictures! But this expectation was about to be totally shot down. It’s Florida, after all – it’s been nicknamed the capital of hurricanes for a reason.
Dan and Angeline arrived to a beautiful day at the beach. Plenty of others were there enjoying it with them, but in the end, it would become obvious that the locals are always ready to get up and go when the tides change. In the meantime, Dan started getting his camera set up and Angeline went exploring a little bit. She was just starting to think this move had been a great decision when the skies began to change.
Beach Day Gone Bad
Dan looked up and saw the very same ominous sky – but he could hardly believe what had happened while he was looking down at his camera for mere moments. As he looked around him, he noticed almost all of the other people, the same ones who had been sunbathing bikini-clad only moments before, were already up and well on their way out of the area. He noted that the locals seemed ready for the weather to change at any time. But where was Angeline?
Making A Break For It
Then, Dan looked around for Angeline in a panic, needing to warn her as soon as possible. But she was already hurrying back towards him – she had actually seen it all first, and was feeling a strong sense of that motherly instinct to get the heck out of there. Seeing Angeline, Dan felt his panic start to double. He scrambled to get his camera gear together in order to get everyone and everything home in one piece.
Safe In The Car
They just barely got out of there before the downpour really hit. Driving home in the pouring rain, they could only imagine what kind of trouble they would be in had they wound up stuck on the beach for any reason. Shocked by how quickly the weather could change, Angeline easily came to the conclusion that the beach might not be the best location for a photo shoot. But Dan wasn’t ready to give up on the idea just yet.
Check The Forecast
In the end, he knew he was going to keep trying until he got it right. But he didn’t have much time left. Over the next several days, he checked the weather forecasts obsessively, making sure that any sign of sun would not be immediately followed by signs of a storm. He was at a crossroads about what to do in his head, not knowing that storms wouldn’t be the only thing sabotaging his long-awaited photo shoot.
Back To The Beach
He was certain that they would both forever regret not having the pictures he was dreaming of if they didn’t make it happen, and believed the risk was manageable. So when the sun finally came out to stay, they headed back to the beach. When they got there, it was full of other beachgoers who had the same idea. The locals were clearly worry-free! Dan got back to setting up his camera once more, and Angeline decided again to wander a bit.
Getting In The Mood
Angeline strolled down to the sparkling water’s edge where she wanted to be photographed. It was a spectacular sight, and she realized that she hadn’t been spending enough time outside because of her pregnancy. It was so nice to finally breathe such fresh air, and get inspired again! She was so surrounded by beauty that it felt like a daydream. But as she kept hugging the water, a crazy commotion started all around her.
More Beach Troubles
The first thing Angeline saw were people once more running away from the water, just like last time. This made her suspect that the weather was about to take another turn for the worse. She knew that Dan wanted her with her feet in the ocean, so that he could frame the shot to look as though she was only surrounded by water – but the fear in the air around her made her wonder if it was safe.
A Reality Check
Unfortunately, as she turned to look for Dan for some reassurance, she noticed that people weren’t actually leaving the beach…only the water. Even more were standing and pointing at the water – in fact, right at where Angeline was standing. As her eyes finally located Dan, she saw him look up to find out what was causing all the chaos, and his face turned immediately white with fear. Something he had not thought possible was actually happening.
Something In The Water
Dan had done so much research on the local statistics of the beach that he had heard sharks were not an uncommon sight in these waters, although attacks were rare. But two of them understood in the same moment that something dangerous was in the water, and judging by everyone else’s signals, it was close to Angeline. Seeing a dark shadow this close to his wife and unborn child held him in the grips of fear.
A Heavy Load
Angeline understood that Dan was not going to hold her hostage there for the photoshoot in the face of this risk – he wanted her to get out as soon as possible. But she had a big problem: her third-trimester pregnancy was making it hard to move! She scrambled to find her balance, but finally got her feet totally out of the water. Right at that moment, the dark shadow finally made an appearance on the surface of the water…
The Other Shadow
Then it jumped all the way out! Dan, Angeline, and all of the other beach-goers realized with amazement that it was just a dolphin. In shock at the entire ordeal, Dan knew it was the opportunity of a lifetime for his photo shoot, and struggled with shaking hands to get his camera ready in time to get the shot. He asked Angeline to smile for the camera one last time. Then he started pushing the picture button as many times as he can.
Strike A Pose
The dolphin disappeared again, and at first, Dan was certain he missed it. But the playful dolphin came back for more, and in the end, he was able to get not one but three shots. Dan could not believe his luck, or how the confusing events of the day had turned out. Unfortunately, his dear wife Angeline was too busy posing for the camera to witness the miraculous dolphin making jumps out of the water right behind her.
A Picture Worth A Thousand Tries
Only a few weeks after all of the crazy beach photography drama, their new son Courtland joined Dan and Angeline in the world. But just as Dan hoped, they had the amazing moment of both their pregnancy and the miracle dolphin captured on camera to remember forever. One day his parents would tell him about the ordeal they had gone through in order to get the incredible pictures framed on their wall at home.
