Immortalized in cartoons throughout the ages, the mailman and the dog are often depicted as sworn enemies. While dogs may act tough in an effort to protect their homes, it’s not unheard of for friendly dogs to stand down after barking out a greeting.
An Uncommon Bond
One mailman, Jeff Kramer, had a penchant for dogs and never minded when he met them along his usual route. When he met Tashi, however, he never knew how much one dog would end up changing his life.

Reaching Twilight
Kramer loved his daily visits with Tashi, the black labrador, but even when the two met, Tashi wasn’t such a young dog. At some point, it became apparent to Jeff that Tashi was aging rapidly, and might not have so much time left. As Tashi’s routines became noticeably disrupted, Jeff knew he had to do something for the elderly dog. He became determined to improve his life as best he could, as long as Tashi’s family gave him their blessing.
Out Of The Blue
Jeff Kramer is a mailman from Boulder, Colorado, located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Boulder is the kind of laid back, friendly city that inspires people to chat with one another as they traverse its open streets or trek one of the hundreds of trails in the vicinity. Kramer was never shy on his post, often chatting with the locals on his way. Still, it wouldn’t be a person who changed his life, it would be Tashi.
An Extraordinary Meet Cute
As Kramer was making the rounds one day several years ago, he saw a black lab bounding towards him as he approached the house to deliver the mail. Kramer knew enough about dogs to know that if he showed any fear, the dog might attack. Instead, he stood his ground, gently allowing the dog to stop his hasty advance in favor of slowly investigating the newcomer approaching his home. The dog sniffed around him, then looked up, wagging his tail in acceptance.
Buddying Up
Kramer held his hand out in front of Tashi’s nose, allowing him to take in Kramer’s smell thoroughly, before giving the dog a brief scratch behind his ears. Neither could know that those small gestures would be the beginning of a special friendship. Tashi accepted Jeff’s light pets, and signaled that he wanted even more love. Kramer was happy to oblige, giving the dog several more minutes of affection before continuing on in order to finish his route for the day.
An Uncommon Bond
Kramer later reflected on his fateful meeting with Tashi, the dog who would become a mainstay of his work days. He told reporters, “You don’t check out a dog first. You let it check you out, and you’re much better off that way.” This was the approach that Kramer generally used for all dogs he met along the way, and it seemed to work fairly well. While he generally avoided getting attacked by any particularly vicious dogs, most didn’t become his friend.
Brightening His Route
Jeff began to look forward to his regular circuits around the South Boulder neighborhood, where Tashi’s family lives on Bluebell Avenue. He continued to think back to their first meeting, reflecting how Tashi approached him on that fateful day. “As fast as he could—which was not very fast—he ran up to me, tail wagging, first day I met him,” Jeff would later say. “He’s just a really friendly dog. I am a dog person, and they can tell.”
Waiting For Each Other
Day after day, no matter the weather, Tashi would be waiting for Jeff to arrive, asking to go out before he approached, so he could bound down the stairs of the front door, licking his hands and face in greeting. Kramer would return the affection in turn, lavishing Tashi with love from his nose to his tail. As much as Kramer liked dogs, he knew his friendship with Tashi was special. He didn’t think that their time might be running out.
Taking Notice
Tashi’s family, the Dimetroskys couldn’t help but notice just how excited he would get whenever Kramer would come by. Though Tashi had always been friendly and happy to say hello to any passersby they met on walks and hikes, they knew his bond with the local mailman was special, although they couldn’t know just what it would eventually mean for them and their beloved dog. In time, they would realize just what a blessing Kramer would be to their lives.
Fostering The Love
“Tashi adores Jeff,” Karen Dimetrosky would tell reporters from the Daily Camera, a local Boulder news outlet. “Tashi would hang outside and would always get so excited when Jeff came… He has always wagged his tail and pulled us over to his mail truck.” As the years passed by, Kramer and Tashi built a daily ritual, where he would leap down the steps of his house in order to visit Jeff, but the years began to take their toll on the dog.
Stiffening Up
Kramer couldn’t help but observe that in recent months, Tashi began to slow down considerably. First he would just take the stairs just a little more slowly, but would still run over to Kramer the moment he’d completed his descent. As time wore on, Tashi stopped running to meet Kramer, instead trotting over to him like an old friend. The pair would then enact their ritual pets, before Kramer would once again continue on his way. Tashi’s situation, however, would continue to change.
Losing His Independence
Though Kramer knew that Tashi was getting on in years, he didn’t know how bad it had actually gotten. Dogs often don’t start to seem old until they’re nearing their final year, where the difference becomes more pronounced. One day, Kramer approached the house on Bluebell Avenue, to see that Tashi wasn’t there waiting for him. Kramer was surprised, and begin to fill with dread, hoping that nothing had happened to his pal without him knowing it. Just then, the door opened.
Getting A Lift
The door creaked its way open, before Kramer saw Karen appear from the shadows. Though at first he didn’t quite understand what was going on, as she made her way into the sunlight, Jeff understood that she was carrying Tashi in her arms. Carefully, Karen descended, step by step, nearly toppling over from the weight of the dog in her arms. When she reached the ground, she cautiously set Tashi on the ground. Kramer felt his heart breaking at the sight of the elderly dog.
Shouldering The Burden
Following their visit, Karen once again heaved Tashi up into her arms, to begin the ascent back into the house. Jeff knew Tashi was old, but he hadn’t known just how much the dog had been struggling. Karen later shared with the local paper, “We were literally carrying him up and down the stairs and he weighs about 70 pounds.” Jeff wanted to do something to help the family and his friend, but the solution didn’t come to him right away.
Sinking In
Jeff thought back to that first time he saw Karen struggling down the stairs with Tashi in her arms. “We didn’t realize how much trouble [Tashi] was having until I saw them actually carry him up the stairs. I remembered my dog having the same problem, and it’s sad.” Kramer thought back to what he did when he own dog was aging and began to struggle with routine tasks. Then, an idea struck Kramer, and he thought it would be perfect for Tashi.
The Life Of A Labrador
On average, Labradors only have an expected life span of 10 to 12 years. By the time Tashi was struggling to make it down the stairs, he was almost 14 years old, spending more than half of his life as a senior dog and surpassing the average life expectancy. It is not uncommon for elderly labradors like Tashi to begin to suffer from arthritis as they age, making activities like climbing up and down stairs difficult for them.
Remembering His Own
Kramer had some experience with elderly dogs prior to Tashi’s decline. He’d been the happy owner of a dog named Odie for a number of years, but Odie had passed away about five years before. Until he was hit by the sadness of Tashi’s own impending mortality, Jeff hadn’t realized just how much his furry friend had filled the hole left when he lost his own dog. It also meant that Jeff knew just the thing that could help out Tashi and the Dimetroskys.
Hitting Their Limit
Kramer knew he needed to do something to help Tashi, and fast. He could see just how much it saddened the dog that he had lost his independence. Karen and her husband were also struggling to manage lifting Tashi up and down the stairs multiple times a day. Because he had dealt with the same thing with his own dog, Kramer one day brought over the pieces he had used to build Odie a ramp down the stairs, but it wasn’t quite enough.
Wasting Away
After bringing over the pile of wood that had just been languishing in his yard, Kramer noticed that all of the wood he had so graciously donated to them was just sitting in their yard. As the months passed, it was clear neither of them had even bothered to touch the pile. We’re not very handy,” Karen later confessed. “I’m more handy than my husband, but I didn’t know how to put that together.”
Unlimited Generosity
It was time to take things into his own hands. On Jeff’s next day off, he decided to head over to the Dimetroskys’ house on Bluebell Avenue, with a tool box in tow. He rang the bell and informed Karen that he had a day off and would be building a ramp for Tashi for them. He knew just how much everyone was suffering from the dog’s old age, and Jeff had the skills and know how to ease the situation.
His Inner Goodness
Jeff didn’t want too much praise to be heaped on him for his help. He loved Tashi as much as he had loved his own dog, and it was painful to see him struggle, even as the dog was insistent on coming to greet Jeff day in and day out. “I just noticed they needed it. I didn’t need it anymore and I hate throwing things away,” he would tell the Daily Camera. But how did Jeff’s selflessness impact Tashi and his family?
Everything Changed
After Jeff installed the ramp in front of the Dimetrosky’s house, a sense of relief permeated the air. Karen and her husband no longer had to lift Tashi every time he needed to go for a walk. Tashi felt the relief as well, as the ramp allowed him to regain his independence. “[Jeff]’s just amazing,” Karen gushed after the local news caught wind of their story. “We’ve had the ramp for a few months and he’s saved us.”
Breaking New Ground
When reporters heard the story, they wanted to know why no one had asked for help with the ramp sooner. “We didn’t know how to assemble it, and we were hesitant putting something so large in front of the house, not knowing how long Tashi would live,” Dimetrosky said. “When Jeff assembled the ramp on a Sunday and we came home and saw him out front, we were so grateful that he took time out of his life to do this for Tashi.”
An Aging Grace
“The ramp has helped Tashi tremendously,” Dimetrosky told Today. ” He can walk in and out of the front door and down to the yard independently. He potentially prolonged his life because my husband and I both pulled our back out by lifting Tashi on and off the porch.” With the help of the ramp, Tashi is more than happy to get off his bed and come to the door when Kramer comes by, but helped him with even more than his independence.
A New Milestone
Because of Jeff’s incredible gift, Tashi has managed to live a better life in his winter years than if he had to continue to be carried down the stairs. The Dimetrosky kids are able to help take him for walks again, but there was an added benefit. Tashi recently celebrated his fourteenth birthday, and his family threw him a party. Of course, Jeff Kramer, the kind hearted mailman who just loves dogs, was an honored guest in attendance.
