When you think of countries that are poor, you tend to think of places in Africa or Asia. It never occurred to many of us that the Western World could suffer from poverty too. In fact, Europe is now filled with poverty-stricken countries. Greece being a prime example of somewhere that’s ravaged by debt. However, are will they make it onto the list or are some places doing so much worse? Here are the poorest countries in Europe worked out by GDP (gross domestic product) per capita.

Moldova – $3,736 GDP

Nearly half of Moldova are living below the poverty line of the country, according to reports. With around 10% living below the international poverty line in the last ten years. This makes it the poorest country in Europe, with many living below the $1.25 a day poverty line wage. Much of the nation’s business comes from agriculture, however trade barriers mean that Moldova cannot export a lot of their produce outside of the country. Their graphic location isn’t the best, meaning that very few tourists ever visit. Add that to the political unrest and awful social policies, and you have the most poverty stricken country in the whole of Europe.
