Even if you don’t live in the UK, there’s a good chance that you’re familiar with Captain Tom Moore. No, he’s not the latest character in a brand new television show, and he certainly isn’t a fashion model taking runways by storm. Instead, Captain Tom Moore is a real-life hero who has been celebrated for his recent achievement — and his 100th birthday — through hundreds and thousands of birthday cards.

Thanking the NHS

In light of the ongoing pandemic, many people across the globe are raising money for hospitals, doctors, nurses, and other organizations who are putting their all into helping those affected by the coronavirus. After a recent hip replacement, a former British military veteran by the name of Captain Tom Moore wanted to thank Britain’s National Health Service for all of their hard work. So, he vowed to walk 100 laps of his yard, and he hoped that he would raise £1,000 ($1,245) at least.

Overwhelming Support

However, when people learned of the heroic man’s plan, they wanted to help. People donated in their millions, and he eventually rose a whopping $35 million for the NHS. He quickly became a national hero and they cheered him along the whole way from the comfort of their own homes. When the grand total was announced, people couldn’t believe that Captain Tom had been able to achieve so much — so they wanted to thank him.

Sending Him Well-Wishes

It soon became common knowledge that Captain Tom Moore was reaching his 100th birthday, and it was clear what people wanted to do to show their support. In total, over 125,000 birthday cards were sent to him ahead of his April 30th birthday, and the local school had to get involved in helping to sort them all out and open them.

Isn’t it amazing what can happen when people work together for the greater good? We bet Tom was thrilled.
