With the world in lockdown, many people are missing the smaller things in life that we often took for granted. We miss being able to grab a coffee on the morning commute to work, we miss being able to head to our grandparents’ house on the weekend, and we miss being able to go to the library to pick out a new book to stick our noses in. It seems as though one school librarian doesn’t want any of her kids to miss out on reading, so she has been delivering books to them via drone.
The School Librarian
Kelly Passek hails from Virginia and loves her job as a middle school librarian. Being able to provide children with stories and knowledge is something that makes her extremely proud – but it seems as though she’s also someone who really appreciates technology. Last year, Kelly heard of a new project in Virginia called Wing. This new company aimed to deliver goods to nearby residents via drone, and she became one of their first customers.
Closing Up Shop
In light of everything going on at the moment, Kelly was upset when she realized that the lockdown and social distancing rules meant that her students couldn’t head to the library to pick up a book. She immediately thought of Wing and wondered whether she would be able to deliver these books through this drone service. She asked her superintendent whether it could be a viable option, and she reached out to Wing to see if they were on-board. Amazingly, everyone agreed that it was an excellent idea.
Coordinating Together
Now, Kelly coordinates with Wing to pack up her library books for delivery. The kids can order them online, and then it’s down to her to choose the book, place it in the delivery containers, and then give it to Wing for them to deliver right into the kids’ front yard.
