When the term ‘bling’ first entered the mainstream, it was associated with hip-hop culture. The idea was that you could literally bling anything in an attempt to showcase your wealth. Basically, encrust anything with jewels and you’ll be seen as wealthy.
While the idea is still around today, it’s a lot less central in culture and can often be seen as outdated or pastiche if it’s not done carefully. However, during the ‘bling’ phase, you could find anything and everything in ‘bling’ form, from cell phones, cars, and rings to teeth, necklaces and even shoes! But just when you think you’ve seen it all – there’s this!
Marlette Fernando, a resident from Phoenix, picked up a weak pigeon and nursed her back to health in her home. After taking care of the feathered friend for a while, she decided that the guest deserved something to make her stand out from the average pigeon. Fernando then created this bejeweled vest for her to wear and the result was hysterical!
While having a pet pigeon as a pet is pretty strange, having a blinged-out pigeon for a pet is something else entirely different! On Nov. 7th of this year, she took Olive out for a test flight after nursing her back to health for months. The minute she was released from her cage, she just up and flew away.
The family was devastated. They had spent so much time with Olive that when she flew away they were hurt and worried about her. However, unbeknownst to them, Olive was retrieved four days later about 10 km away and handed over to a bird sanctuary called Fallen Feathers.
After tending to her and making sure she was fed and in good health, which she was, they decided to put her up for adoption. When they uploaded the Facebook post for Olive, it became an overnight internet sensation! In next to no time, news outlets had picked up the story and it spread fast. Eventually, Marlette happened to come across the ad by chance and called immediately. She was reunited with Olive in a few days and has kept her blinged up and inside ever since!
