These New Parents Were Shocked, But How They Dealt With It Is Inspiring

Mixed-race couple Daunte and Jessica Norman live a happy life in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Yet their lives were about to become a whole lot more eventful when Jessica found out that she was pregnant. Shocked by what they would discover in the delivery room, the way that the Normans have dealt with their situation is awe-inspiring.

The Normans already had a beautiful daughter by the name of the Sydney. But naturally, Daunte and Jessica were extremely excited when they found out that they were expecting once again.

But this time, things were a little different. The doctors completely threw the couple by surprise when they informed them that they were going to have twins. Daunte and Jessica were over the moon that they would be bringing two boys into the world to add some balance to their family dynamic. They had plenty of time to prepare for the double arrival. However, they couldn’t help but imagine what the twins would look like and which parent each boy would look like.

The couple was light-hearted during the months building up to the birth. They joked and worried about how things would turn out. Would both babies be well? Would one have an illness? “We did say ‘imagine if one does come out really dark and one does come out looking light,'” Jessica said. With a black parent and a white mother, the possibilities of how children can look are a bit less predictable. But little did they know, a surprise was coming their way…

Jessica commented on what the months were like building up to the birth of her twin boys. She was so desperate to find out what her sons would look like. “We had no idea what they would end up looking like. And throughout the pregnancy, we kind of talked about it. Like ‘I wonder what they will turn out looking like.’ and just having little conversations.” Like who will they look like, like normal parents do.”

Like her parents, daughter Sydney could not wait to finally have some new additions to the family. Until this point, she was an only child and was desperate for some company closer to her age. With her fair skin and blonde hair, it may be surprising for some that Sydney came from an interracial couple. And she was just as excited as her parents to see if her new siblings would look like her too or not.

Throughout the pregnancy, Daunte was the ultimate husband. He supported Jessica exceptionally, always available to attend to her needs at any given time. He was by her side every step of the way. And he remained with her right up until the day that she delivered. Daunte was there to give Jessica words of support and to hold her hand during the birth. Along with the nurses, he would receive the first glimpse, revealing something very special about the arrivals.

But nothing could prepare Daunte for what he was about to see. Looking back at the fateful moment, the new father could not believe what he and the nurses would see. It was completely extraordinary and something that Daunte never anticipated during the nine months of preparation. Thankfully, unlike fathers in the movies, Daunte kept his control and didn’t faint. “It kind of blew my mind but at the same time it was unique,” Daunte said.

Jessica, who had just given birth, was still unable to see her newborn babies. But shortly after, Daunte told her that she was never going to believe how they look. But based on his happy expression, she knew she had nothing to worry about. “Well I couldn’t see them,” she said. “So my reaction was completely coming from him. And that was literally between him and the nurses. Like ‘You are never going to believe how different they look!'”

Finally, the moment had arrived. Jessica had the chance to see her new babies. And upon seeing them for the first time, she finally understood what all the fuss was about. The baby boys were a sight for sore eyes. And naturally, Jessica was as shocked as everyone else in the room about what she saw. Like Daunte, she never anticipated such a unique revelation. So this is what made Daunte, Jessica and all those nurses so surprised. What makes the boys so different was their contrasting skin colors. One of the twins was much darker than the other. One of the babies was closer to Daunte’s color and the other had a skin tone more akin to Jessica’s. And although Daunte and Jessica had joked about the off-chance that this sort of thing could happen, they never actually expected the idea to become a reality.

Daunte and Jessica had names prepared for the twins and decided to name the healthy pair Brayden and Cameron. And in the event of twins, one would think that names would be of extra importance in order to differentiate the two. But the new parents didn’t have such a problem. As Daunte explained in an interview with Fox News in March 2017, “We ain’t gonna have no problem telling these babies apart. We knew exactly who was who from the go.”

But an initial shock in the delivery room quickly dissipated. Although Daunte and Jessica acknowledge that their twin sons do look unusual, they still love them both equally and consider such a unique scenario a blessing. Jessica has been honest though about the twins’ reception in the public eye. The parents often noticed passersby staring at their children in bewilderment or even in awe. “They get attention everywhere they go,” Jessica said in an interview with Fox News.

But Daunte has voiced his concern about how his boys will deal with such public scrutiny growing up. “You know, sometimes people stare too much,” the proud father said. Daunte does not want his kids to feel uncomfortable if he wants to go to the park with them or when he takes them to kindergarten. He does not want people’s ignorance and prejudices to affect Brayden and Cameron in a negative light. As far as Daunte’s concerned, he just wants the boys to have normal upbringings.

But it’s natural for strangers to look at twins like Brayden and Cameron with a sense of surprise. And from a biological standpoint, it makes perfect sense. Although fraternal twins stem from different fertilizations, it is extremely rare for such twins to have different skin tones. It is even less common when interracial couples are concerned. In one report, a British doctor made the estimation that only one in 500 twins are born with different skin colors.

That was one thing that Daunte and Jessica were sure about during the pregnancy. They were informed early on that their sons probably would not look exactly the same. And there is a good reason for this: Jessica was carrying a certain pair of twins. They were not identical, but fraternal. The main difference between the two types is pretty simple. Each fraternal twin is fertilized by the different sperm cell. While identical twins are fertilized by the same one.

Despite the tough time they have endured in public areas, Brayden and Cameron are a resilient pair and quite the dynamic duo. According to Daunte and Jessica, they are best friends. They absolutely love each other’s company and naturally, have a lot in common. The twins enjoy playing on swings together and also love football. Father Daunte will always dress them in matching jerseys and caps for Football Sunday. It is a new family tradition.

But the Normans have used their unique situation as a positive opportunity to help people who are unfamiliar with such a condition. According to Jessica, it’s a chance to educate others. “I think we’re so used to it now, but I think we were blessed with that opportunity,” she said. “You know, to actually be able to educate and teach people that this can happen and there’s not one feature for a mixed child that they all have.”

Jessica laughs when she needs to explain the basic misconception; despite how different they look, the boys are in fact twins. But she is determined to help develop a better understanding in wider society. “It’s more of like a teaching opportunity I would say for us. If we were to have those wheels turning when they’re looking at us at dinner more like, ‘Is he the dad of both of them? Are they twins? Does this work? What’s the dynamic?'”

And even though there may be a misunderstanding, Jessica has a lot of patience for people and is happy to explain the situation. Jessica has heard it all. ‘Are the boys brothers?’ ‘Do they have the same father?’ She commented by saying that “we can use it as a teaching tool like, ‘Hey, they are biracial brothers, they’re twins, they’re the same. But they look totally different.'” Despite the awkward public moments, the parents remain extremely proud of Brayden and Cameron.

Jessica has taken to the media to try and empower parents who may also have twins with differing skin colors. She said, “Be proud of it. Don’t be afraid of it and embrace it so your children do.” Because ultimately, if Daunte and Jessica are able to show how proud they are of their beautiful boys, the confidence should rub off on Brayden and Cameron, as well as onto similar families. “If there is someone out there like us? Share it. Be proud of it.”

And it turns out that the Normans aren’t the only family out there with twins of different skins colors. After Jessica took to the media to call upon other families, multiple other cases have surfaced since. The Normans certainly are not alone. In April 2017, another pair of twins from Illinois graced the internet after celebrating their first birthday together. But this time, Kalani and Jarani Dean are twin daughters who are also from an interracial family.

Like twins Brayden and Cameron, the two girls stunned their parents when they arrived into the world with different skin colors. But the Deans had more concerns than what Daunte and Jessica had with their boys. The girls’ parents were concerned with Kalani’s complexion. They were under the suspicion that Kalani’s pale skin was actually albinism. But after having tests and checking with their doctor, they found that this was not the case. In reality, the Deans had nothing to worry about.

What makes Kalani’s appearance even more peculiar is one of her particular features: her eyes. Kalani has baby blue eyes, which look considerably different to her sister Jarani’s brown eyes. When the pair are sat side by side, it is an incredible sight. And their mother, Whitney Meyer, can’t stop looking at her special twins. In January 2017, in an interview with People magazine, Whitney commented how she looks at her daughters as “miracle babies.”

The inclusion of these “miracle babies” in her life made mother Whitney ask some huge questions that have haunted philosophers and sociologists for generations. Ultimately, she looks at her twins as a perfect reason as to “why racism shouldn’t exist.” It is families like the Normans and Deans that goes to show that the color of someone’s skin is such an arbitrary detail that should not define someone’s status. Ultimately, beneath the surface, Whitney’s daughters are exactly the same.

There are many more cases out there of interracial families with twins of different skin colors. The Normans and the Deans are just two of them. They are perfect reminders as to why it is so important to never judge a book by its cover. And even though Brayden and Cameron will not be able to trick people into believing one is the other, they will still most likely be able to end each other’s sentences. They also have two very proud parents.
